Shortly after the announcement of the Smash World Tour, COVID-19 put an end to in-person Smash Tournaments for the year. And while the future is still uncertain regarding how soon we’ll be back to competing in person, we were determined to find a way to make the Smash World Tour a reality in 2021.

While there are some temporary changes from our original format in this “bridge” year, we’re excited to offer a hybrid format in order to provide circuits for both Melee and Ultimate!

Who will be crowned World Champion?

The 2021 hybrid format consists of both region-locked Online Qualifiers as well as in-person, invitational-style, Regional Finals around the world.

For Ultimate, region-locked Online Qualifiers will determine who advances to our Regional Finals. For Melee, a panel of community leaders representing regions across the globe will select Regional Finalists based on tournament results in 2020 and 2021.

While we can’t assume large scale community events will be back by a certain point in 2021, we of course are excited for their eventual return! Even though we have to wait until 2022 to revert back to the original tour format, we’ll be spotlighting community events at each stop of the Tour this year!

    DECEMBER 17 - 19

Quite the opposite, we see 2021 as sort of a “bridge” year given the unpredictability of COVID. That said, we’re incredibly hopeful that by 2022 we’ll be able to run the original format of Platinum, Gold and Silver community events around the world.

You can check out the full breakdown of how many players from their respective regions around the world will advance to the Regional finals here.

Note: Due to the unique format of the Tour this year, players will be responsible for their own travel to the Regional Finals and World Tour Finals.

While we are optimistic the rollout of the vaccine will be very successful, we know COVID-19 may still impact events for a large part of the year. Our hope is that the 2021 SWT hybrid format will be a good fit given the uncertainty. All of our in-person Regional Finals will only have 16 competitors per game and will not take place until the summer and fall.

Our aim is that given the size of the Regional Finals tournaments, it will not only be easier to safely host the events when the time comes – but also adapt and postpone if we are unable to run them on schedule.

Thanks to our amazing partners, the Smash World Tour Championships will have a starting total prize pool of $150,000 ($75,000 for Ultimate, $75,000 for Melee). There are prizes for the Regional Finals as well, bringing the total starting prize pool for 2021 to $210,000.

However, throughout the year there will be a few ways to increase those totals!

All 32 Smash World Tour Finalists from both games will qualify for prize money – and you can see the full breakdown of the prize pool distribution on our Rules Page.

At this time, the Smash World Tour is not associated or affiliated with Nintendo® or Nintendo of America® – though we hope to team up with them in the future! One of our goals with the Tour is to offer a unified way for Nintendo® to directly support the competitive scene.

Coming soon! Keep an eye out for the launch of the official Smash World Tour shop, where we’ll have official SWT merchandise, opportunities to grow the prize pools, unique shop goals, collaborations, and more!

We have an independent panel of Melee community leaders representing each region of the world. They will be selecting the finalists using a variety of factors including tournament results from both 2020 and 2021. We’ll be announcing the invited players about 8 weeks out from each Regional Final.

Due to COVID-19, the Smash World Tour was not able to be comprised of community events in 2021 like in its original format. Instead, this year we are spotlighting community events at each Tour stop, both online and in-person. For a full schedule of events, and their community spotlights, click here!

We do – all players participating in the Smash World Tour must agree during sign up to abide by the Code of Conduct linked here. We also reserve the right to ban any players who violate the code of conduct or enforce previous bans enacted by community organizers.
